How to Hire a Remote Software Developer from Nepal

By Pujan Lamichhane ·

Nepal has a growing community of software engineers who work remotely for startups and companies in the US, Europe and Australia. I am one of them. If you are thinking about hiring a developer from Nepal, this is what I would want you to know.

Time zones work in your favour

Nepal is on UTC+5:45. For a team in Europe, the working days overlap for most of the afternoon. For the US, the overlap is shorter, but it means work often progresses while you sleep and is ready for review in your morning. What matters is agreeing on a few fixed hours for calls and fast replies, and writing things down so nobody waits on a meeting.

Judge the work, not the CV

The fastest way to evaluate any developer is to look at what they have shipped. Ask for live products, not just repositories. Ask what they built themselves and what they did as part of a team. On my projects page I separate the products I built solo, like NepseView and theMixtr, from the ones where I joined an existing team.

Communication is the real skill

Most remote projects that fail do so because of unclear expectations, not weak code. Look for someone who:

  • Asks questions about the business, not only the feature
  • Writes clear updates without being chased
  • Says early when something will take longer than planned
  • Shows working software through preview links instead of describing it

Contracts and payments

Upwork and Fiverr give both sides protection on payments and a public review history, which is useful for a first project. For longer engagements, a direct contract with milestones works well. Developers in Nepal can receive international payments through these platforms and through services like Payoneer and bank transfer.

Start with a small, real piece of work

A paid trial on a real but contained task tells you more than any interview. A focused feature, a bug that has been open for weeks, or the first slice of an MVP are good options.

What it looks like working with me

I am a senior engineer based in Bharatpur, Chitwan, licensed by the Nepal Engineering Council, and I have worked with clients in the United States, France, Australia, Israel, Algeria, South Africa and Mali. You can read their reviews on the homepage and get in touch to talk about your project.
